Africa Moving Towards Carbon Neutrality

Taking Coal After The Ground

Up to now,Total solar energy capacity : 3.061GW In 2011, the Government of South Africa launched a competitive procurement program for renewable energy called the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP). Since the launch of this public-private partnership, US $16 billion in private-sector investment has been committed for 79 awarded projects totaling 5,243 MW of renewable energy. The program has resulted in significant reductions in tariff rates for solar photovoltaics (PV) and wind over a short period. Rural development is also being positively impacted by the deployment of renewable energy technologies through the REIPPPP. The REIPPPP is highlighted as a significant policy for enabling achievement of climate change mitigation goals under South Africa’s INDC.

Joburg plans move away from Eskom’s grid, targeting renewable power Johannesburg, Africa’s dominant financial centre, wants to meet 35% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2030 and will seek proposals for privately supplied power by August.

South Africa’s biggest city, with a population of over five million people, is looking for its own power suppliers after the government last year said municipalities could buy electricity from companies other than state power utility Eskom.

The move would reduce reliance on Eskom, which has subjected the country to periodic power outages for over 13 years because of unreliable generation.

Energy security and cost are a challenge for mines across Africa. Grid-connected mines are dealing with erratic power supply and rising tariffs. Remote operators are managing volatile and increasing diesel and HFO prices. Add to this the increasing pressure for mining companies to meet ESG and climate goals, and the need to transition to sustainable, affordable, and reliable energy is clear.

From this, Energy Box collaborating with the most active energy leaders and expects to go deep dive into Africa renewable energy market, Moving from Emerging Concepts to Advanced Practices, unlock Africa market development

HIGHLIGHTS:-  International Energy Agency (IEA) calls for annual additions of solar PV to reach 630 GW by 2030. The pathway calls for annual additions of solar PV to reach 630 GW by 2030, and those of wind power to reach 390 GW. The report said this combined
capacity is four times what was installed in 2020, a record year. For solar PV, it is equivalent to installing the world’s current largest solar parks–around 1,000 MW–roughly every day.
